微軟釋出 Windows 8 四個版本：Windows 8、Windows 8 Pro、Windows 8 RT、Windows 8 Enterprise。消費者與企業用戶必知 10 件事：
- Windows 8 核心版即滿足多數消費者需求：內建 Windows Media Player、IE10、Windows Store 等標準功能，一般用戶無需專業版。
- Windows 8 Pro 為中小企業必備：含核心版所有功能，另加 BitLocker、Client Hyper-V、加密檔案系統 (EFS) 等關鍵企業功能。
- Windows 8 RT 缺乏關鍵功能：無 Windows Media Player、無儲存空間、無法執行 x86/x64 傳統桌面應用程式（僅限 Metro 應用），這是最大限制。
- Windows 8 Enterprise 專為大型企業：在 Pro 基礎上加入 PC 管理部署、虛擬化、Windows To Go、DirectAccess、BranchCache、AppLocker 等進階功能，僅限軟體保證 (SA) 客戶採購。
- 升級路徑限制：Win7 入門版/家庭基本版/家庭優化版可升級至 Win8/Win8 Pro；Win7 專業版/旗艦版僅能升級至 Win8 Pro；RT 版不支援升級。
- 遠端桌面僅限 Pro/Enterprise：核心版與 RT 版不支援遠端桌面主機功能。
- 版本大幅簡化：僅 4 版本、消費者僅 2 選擇，較 Vista/Win7 時代簡單明瞭，有助提升銷售轉換率。
- RT 版預裝 Office：包含 Word、Excel、PowerPoint、OneNote，核心版/專業版不預裝，微軟未說明對 Office 營收影響。
- RT 版僅預裝於裝置：無零售版，僅能購買預裝 RT 的平板/裝置。
- 價格與上市日期未公開：微軟承諾稍後公布，在此之前可先試用消費者預覽版評估適合度。
